Audrius Naujokaitis was a painter, photographer, muralist, filmmaker, journalist, but foremost - Audrius was unmistakably Audrius. He was passionate, turbulent, sweet of character.
Audrius Naujokaitis film Jonas Mekas. Life Is Just Beginning is a poetic celebration of Jonas Mekas and an ephemeral New York City. And, now, the film takes on a nostalgic sense, as well. Although it was filmed in the last millennium, only sixteen years ago, it almost feels like an artifact of an Ancient Somewhere.
Audrius layered painterly, interconnectedimages, re-creating the dizziness of New York busy-ness. The film is a portrait of Jonas Mekas. However, it is not an interview; it is, rather, observation of an old friend, going about his daily routines, walking, talking, grimacing, making fun of himself and others. Ingrained playfulness gives the film a timeless quality. While it is quite long, it lends itself to loop, without end, andpossibly even, without beginning.
